Travis Pastrana Subaru Impreza WRX STI - Auto Shows

On his new mayhem-packed MTV showNitro Circus, rally star Travis Pastrana and his band of durable friends test their mettle in a series of stunts, often damaging or destroying the metal on or in which they’re riding (not to mention parts of their musculoskeletal systems). After seeing the first episode, we’d think twice before giving Pastrana a shiny new custom Impreza WRX STI.

Nonetheless, Subaru says Pastrana has earned the car—to be shown first at the 2009 Chicago auto show—after his three consecutive Rally America national championships. Pastrana was signed on as Subaru’s first U.S. factory rally driver for 2006, after winning the gold in the first-ever X Games rally competition (he won it again in 2008).

Pastrana’s new STI was built by Vermont SportsCar, the shop that prepares and maintains his #199 rally Subaru. They’ve put in a performance-tuned ECU and custom down pipe to coax more than the factory-packed 305 hp from the 2.5-liter flat-four STI mill. A boost gauge, noticeably absent on stock STIs, has been added to facilitate further tuning. There’s also a short-throw shifter attached to the Subie’s six-speed.
