Chrysler extends shutdown for extra, fifth week

>> Tuesday, February 17, 2009

Imaginary soundbite never uttered: "This is going well, all this money we're not spending..." And so it is that the plant shutdowns announced in December will be extended for an extra week. Instead of reopening on January 19th, workers at the Belvidere and Sterling Heights plants; as well as Toluca, Mexico; will return on January 26th. The GEMA engine facility in Trenton, MI has also had its hiatus extended.

The extension is an adjustment, according to Chrysler, in response to continued economic gloom that's hit the auto industry hard, and Chrysler even harder. January 2009 has been difficult for Chrysler so far, with sales off 53 percent, giving the Pentastar the dubious honor of being down more than its Detroit colleagues. Minivan and Viper facilities get an even longer break. The Windsor, Ontario and Conner Avenue plants don't reopen until February 2nd, a date that was part of the initial extended shutdown plan.
